itineraries

As you can see on our River maps (click opposite), Brisbane offers a great network of river ferry services on which you can take your bicycle at no extra cost. Combine a City Transport "Day Rover" ticket (about $9) with the extensive network of commuter and recreational cycle paths throughout the City and suburbs, the opportunity, trips and destinations in easy range of cycling from the City become too numerous to count.

"Citytrain" can quickly whisk you to some delightful out of town spots depending on your interest. The Boondall Wetlands nature reserve is very popular (as long as we are not in a drought), or further along the same rail line is Sandgate, a bayside suburb with some great examples of old Queensland beachfront houses and from where you can cycle across the now disused Hornibrook Highway Bridge (2.5 km) to the old style bayside resort of Redcliffe. (Great fish and chips).

These are shown on the City map and colour coded with the Botanic Gardens as the starting point. This area is also shown on the main River map as “Itineraries number 2 in red and 3 in orange.”

  • The Blue Track to Queensland University, cross the river on the City Cat Ferry and return via West End.
  • The Green Track to Bretts Wharf, Hamilton, Breakfast Creek, Newstead House, New Farm Park and the Floating Boardwalk.
Longer Rides

We have written itineraries that will show you how to get to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, about 40km round trip through some beautiful old leafy suburbs, but you can get a boat home to the city if you think that is too far.

If you enjoy cycling along the beachfront, head for the Redcliffe Peninsular where you can cycle on dedicated cycle paths for nearly 40 kilometres (calculated round trip from Sandgate Railway Station). It's really a great relaxing cycle with lots to see, but you need to be organised.

You can phone Citytrain on 13 12 30 to get the times of trains to Sandgate and follow this guide from there. Trains run every 30 minutes on all days of the week. Train restrictions apply to bicycles in peak time “flows”.

You can cycle the whole 120km from the City on 90% cycle paths and 10% quiet streets. On the way you will pass through The Boondall Wetlands or you can make that a shortened itinerary!

Cycle to the Country

  • West to Ipswich and Rosewood and the Great Dividing Range foothills.
